Luke 11:34-36

Am I continuing to study and obey God’s words, so I will have good understanding of His ways and discernment of good and evil (spiritual eyes)?

34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you."

INSIGHT:  Oh, how we underestimate the importance of this truth from Jesus, about spiritual sight.  Imagine trying to walk around a savannah in Africa, or the jungles of South America with impaired physical vision.  Is that a gazelle you see in the far off, or a lion?  Was that a deer running nearby you, or a jaguar?  Your physical eyesight would very likely determine whether you live or die in those places.  Have you realized that it is your spiritual eyesight that will determine whether you live or die among all the spiritual forces of evil in this world of wilderness?

Jesus says, “When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light.” When Jesus told the Pharisees in John 9:39 that He came for judgment, so that the blind would see, and those who could see would become blind, He was not referring to the few people to whom he gave physical sight to.  He was saying He came to give some people spiritual eyes to see and understand God’s truth, and to make others spiritually blind to it (Mat 13:15).  This is terrifying, when you realize the full implications of this and that you are entirely dependent upon God to see His truth which keeps you from trouble and spiritual death.

From this teaching, we can see that just as people may have varying degrees of physical blindness, we all can have varying degrees of spiritual blindness.  These varying degrees of light in each Christian is what causes so many conflicts and divisions.  One person can see the truth clearly while the other person cannot, no matter how much you try to explain it.  This is one of the many painful experiences of being a Christian who can see among those who cannot.

Jesus says in v. 35 “See to it that the light within you is not darkness”.  But how can light in you be darkness?  Because it is counterfeit light.  It looks like light to you, but not to God.  Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light, but he is a counterfeit.  We desperately need the true light of God’s truth in countless life scenarios in this antichrist driven world.  The question is not what your favorite news anchor, church leader, or family member sees as light, but what does God see when He looks at Israel, Donald Trump, that minister, that movement, that conspiracy theory, that global event or war, etc.? God is only near to those who call upon Him in truth (Ps 145:18).  He allows our ignorance for a time, but when we finally interpret a doctrine, a person, or an event, differently than God, we are no longer calling upon Him in truth, and we are vulnerable to the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms, who are the authors of much counterfeit light.

It is very dangerous to presume that your eyes are better than they are, especially if you are attempting something dangerous.  I am nearly 51 years old, and I never realized how bad my physical eyes were, until one day I put on Lisa’s glasses.  Suddenly everything became sharp and almost 3D looking.  It was only then I realized just how bad my eyesight was.  Similarly, when you read the testimonies or teachings of the old proven Christan saints (which I have asked people to do for years), it’s like putting on their spiritual glasses, and suddenly realizing that your spiritual eyes are not as good as you have always thought.

The more of God’s Word we have in our hearts, and the more of it we obey, the more light He will give us for meeting life’s issues, by the wisdom of God (Job 28:12-13, Psa 111:10, 119:104, 130, Hebrews 5:14).  The more true light we have in us, the more we will be able to discern between what is truly good and what is evil in this world (i.e.. “Is that a sheep, or a wolf?”).

Are you certain you are seeing things in your life and this world the way God does?  In Humility, subject yourself to a spiritual examination, asking The Great Optometrist of Heaven to diagnose the quality of your spiritual eyes and the light you now see. (2 Cor 13:5).
