91 - Lydia - Having Faith vs Putting God to the Test (07-20-2017)
Is Your Leap of Faith a Step of Obedience or Presumption?
We often stand at the precipice of big decisions, eager to take a "leap of faith." We feel the pull of something new, a change of scenery, a radical shift in our lives. But how do we know if this urge is truly God's leading or our own restless hearts whispering enticing possibilities?
The man in Mark 5:19, delivered from demonic torment, felt a similar pull. He saw Jesus, his deliverer, and cried out, "I want to go with you!" A natural response, considering Jesus' call to discipleship, to "take up his cross and follow me" (Mark 8:34). Yet, Jesus' response was unexpected: "Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you" (Mark 5:19).
This story reminds us that obedience to God's specific instructions is paramount, even when it differs from our perceived "leap of faith." Sometimes, God's will for us is not the grand adventure we envision, but the faithful service right where we are. Like Paul, who was prevented by the Holy Spirit from going to Asia despite his desire to preach there (Acts 16:6-7), we must be sensitive to God's whispers, even when they redirect our carefully laid plans.
True faith isn't throwing caution to the wind and expecting God to catch us. It's surrendering our hearts to God, seeking His will through prayer and wise counsel, and trusting that His timing is perfect. It's about saying, "Not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). So, before you take that leap, ask yourself: is it a step of obedience, or a jump into presumption based on your own desires? God's path may not be the one you expect, but it will always be the one that leads to true fulfillment and peace.
