Is Mormonism Christian? A Frank Discussion on Truth and Counterfeits

Is your faith built on a solid foundation of truth, or have you possibly been led astray by a counterfeit? This question is critical, for it has eternal implications. Today, we explore the differences between biblical Christianity and Mormonism, addressing a young man's sincere questions about his faith.

The Apostle Paul warned the early church about the dangers of deception, saying, "I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:3). He goes on to warn about those who preach "a different Jesus," "a different spirit," and "a different gospel" (2 Corinthians 11:4). Similarly, in Galatians 1:8, he pronounces a curse on anyone, even an angel, who preaches a different gospel. These warnings are sobering, reminding us that Satan, the great deceiver, has been counterfeiting the truth for thousands of years, to lead us astray.

How then can we discern the true Jesus from the counterfeits? Jesus Himself said, "You will know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16). True faith is evidenced by a changed life, a life marked by the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). It is characterized by the seven blessings Jesus promised to all his true followers, a divine provision that transcends human sufficiency (Matthew 6:31-34), a peace that surpasses all understanding (John 14:27), a rest for the weary soul (Matthew 11:27-29), freedom from sin (John 8:31-36), contentment in Christ (John 4:13-14), unambiguous answered prayers (John 15:5-9), and the abiding joy of the Lord (John 15:9-10).

Furthermore, Jesus said, "If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own" (John 7:17). This is a key principle: true followers of Christ obey His teachings, not out of religious obligation, but out of a transformed heart, a heart that loves and desires to please God. They hear God speak (John 8:47), and their lives bear witness to the reality of their faith.

Do you have this evidence in your life? Does your faith produce these fruits? Do you hear God speak and obey His commands? If not, you may be following a counterfeit, a religion that has the appearance of godliness but lacks the power to truly transform your life. Examine your faith. Don't be afraid to question what you've been taught. Pray earnestly, asking God to open your eyes.
