Am I remembering that I cannot out give God, and that I will be rewarded for any sacrifices I make in order to follow and serve Jesus?
28 Peter said to him, “We have left everything to follow you!” 29 "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life."
INSIGHT: Sometimes, Jesus directs us to follow Him in ways that require us to sacrifice and leave a job, a business, or even our family for a time. This can be very scary and painful, but God promises great reward if we have the faith to follow.
I will never forget May 29th 2011. The divorce had taken its toll. I was losing everything and had to move back home with my parents. I was driving up I-75 with everything I owned, and was moving 600 miles away from my children. I remember crying and being so confused saying, “God, how can this be your will for me to leave these children behind like this and in this situation…how can this be?” God spoke clearly to my heart, “Trust me.” That’s all He said. Let me tell you what He held back.
He didn’t say , “Michael, I am going to separate you from everything you have ever known, so that I can teach you how to walk with me and to hear me over everyone else.” He didn’t say, “I’m going to teach you my ways and begin speaking to you every day, giving clear direction for my purpose for you.” He didn’t tell me, “You will become a better father to your children and a better husband to the NEW WIFE (Couldn't resist emphasis here pointing out Father's recent faithfulness to promise that I wrote about BEFORE it actually happened...What timing!)... I will give to you one day, by becoming a better son to me. He didn’t say, “I’m going to use the hardness of heart in your enemies, like a blow torch in my hand to burn off all that is in you that is in my way. He didn’t say, “Michael, I’m going to move you from only knowing about me to knowing me in ways you never dreamed possible.” He didn’t say, “I am going to give you a rest and a peace and contentment unlike anything you have ever known, and I’m going to warn you of dangers. You will be deeply fulfilled in me, regardless of the circumstances in your life, and you will thank me more times for allowing this suffering in your life than you do for my removing it.” He didn’t say any of that and He certainly didn’t say, “I am going to redeem all of this one day and use it to encourage others I love, and bring me glory, if you will just obey me. In fact you will have many new brothers in sisters around the world. You are even going to write a book, inspiring others to follow me.” He didn’t say those things to me, yet they happened. I had to be willing to walk through the darkness, in faith, in order to see His promises for my life.
If we are called to be separated from our loved ones, we can know that God has a very good reason, and we can put our full trust in Him, rather than our own human understanding. Do not allow fear of loss to rob you of God's very best for your life. He will be with you through any sacrifice you make.
